Obey Cardiff: First Birthday Celebrations
Over the past several years Cardiff has been establishing itself within the electronic music scene with a respectable selection of artists, promoters and venues. For those of you who love something a little deeper and less mainstream, Obey is the pefect night for you. On the eve of their first birthday event with the mighty Arkist joinging them to celebrate a whole twelve months of bringing seriously good music to the Welsh capital, I caught up with one of the duo responsible, Jon, to find out a little more.
Joanna Louise Ranson: So it’s been a pretty hectic year since you started, what has been the highlight so far?
It’s hard to pick one particular highlight for the last year but the two which spring to mind would be when we had Andy Mac and Orphan 101 down in July – having such a good turnout for two of our favourite underground acts was a real pleasure and also when we linked up with Signature for Julio Bashmore as it sold out in ten minutes. We had such good feedback after the event too.
JLR: For those of who don’t know much about Cardiff, what kind of music do you supply to the masses?
We are a bit of a hybrid really. Expect to hear everything from Dubstep and Future Garage to House, Techno, Rave Breaks and Juke. Both of us have such broad tastes in music we try to reflect that in our events.
JLR: Would you say that the Obey nights fill a gap in the scene there?
We certainly try to. When we started up, we were looking to fill the gap in Cardiff for leftfield Dubstep/Future Garage as it was fairly nonexistent here apart from the odd tune or set, but as the sound has progressed into what it’s now called bass music so the night has evolved to accommodate these new styles.
JLR: Tell us a little more about your first birthday.
The event is headlined by Arkist who is one of our favourite acts. We have been following his beats and mixes for a while now and have been desperate to bring him to the city to show everyone what all the fuss is about. Aside of, we have a 16 strong b2b of most of our previous support DJs running either side of Arkist.
JLR: What have you got lined up for the rest of this year and for 2012?
After our birthday event, we will be doing another show on the 2nd December, details of which we will be releasing in the next fortnight and for the New Year, the main plan is to just keep pushing the nights and trying to take the sound to more and more people.
