Interview: Skewby

If you haven’t downloaded his mixtape yet, your sleeping oh you probably haven’t got internet or a computer either way download it now here or here . Recently seen in the Source magazine’s Unsigned Hype, not bad but it’s going to be bad on other rappers this young MC is trouble and he spits hot fire!

Now check the interview at bottom “check it like you went to the checkout machine” (Some rhymes I just wrote down that I thought would rhyme lol)

Hi Skewby thanks for taking your time do this interview from your busy schedule right now with shows…

Where have you just performed?

Last show was in Pittsburgh that Iremember, haha. Excuse my memory but I believe that was it.

What was the craziest moment that has happened in a show you have performed in?

I did this show at a University like two months ago. I came out, the energy was crazy. I came out jumping, running to both sides of the stage, not even noticing my shoe strings got tied up in the mic cord! My homie Reggie kept trying to get it for me while I was performing. Then I just stopped, took my shoe off, and threw it behind me. The people went crazy! Ended up doing two songs with one shoe, then the rest of it in my socks. Good times, man.

Well done on getting a feature in ‘Sources Unsigned Hype’, did that come unexpected to you?

YES. People think I went up to NY and had a photo shoot with The Source, haha. We took that pic at the crib. My manager told me the source had reached out and they were watching me, but I wasn’t expecting to be featured. It’s a blessing foreal. I came up buying EVERY source magazine, reading EVERY unsigned hype article. I was that kid with magazine pages all over the wall, so that meant a lot to me.

What DJ’s have you been doing shows with?

DJ Crumbz and DJ Charlie White. Those are my DJ’s man! We’re the team! Every time you see me I’ll probably be with one of them, or both.

Everyone probably asks you this but what is with the name Skewby how did that come about is there a story behind it?

When I was kid I played basketball a lot. When I went to the goal I would make these horrible faces and friends would mess with me and say I looked like Scooby. It turned into a nickname over time. When I was 12 and knew that I wanted to rap, I just kept it as my rap name. Of course as I got older I would question it, but it’s me. The funniest part is when I introduce myself to people who have no clue who I am or what I do. Hey, I’m Skewby. The faces I’ve gotten over the years…lol

What is one DJ you would love to tour with and do shows?

The DJ who rides with me win, lose, or draw.

What is a producer right now you’ll love to work with?

Any producer who is passionate and puts his or her heart in every single beat they make. Somebody with talent and crazy work ethic. It’s not about names with me. I want to work withsomebody who can hang with me in the studio. I’m intense; I really go hard and give my all in there from production to the rapping side.

It’s not a surprise in terms of your production, what artists have you produced for?
Honestly, I haven’t done production for other artists in a minute. I’ve been in a cave working on my new project. When it’s complete I’m definitely gonna be working with a lot of up & coming artists as far as production goes. I got some crazy beats right now that I know I’m not using. It’s just about getting the right people to bless them.

Ok so do you produce your own music?

Yessir, all day every day.

What does your first mixtape Proving you wrong since 1988 mean to you?

It means a lot man. I didn’t know it was going to do what it did. At the same time, I wasn’t surprised. My homie Judo calls it, the little mixtape that could. I’m the type of person who finishes something and moves on to the next so I’m deep into this new project right now. It’s hard to reflect. I’m just thankful for every fan I’m gaining and every opportunity presented.

What are you trying to prove?

Nothing really. Proving people wrong is just something that comes with being successful. It happens. I don’t feel like I have to prove anything to anybody though. God believes in me, that’s all I’ve ever needed.

What do you want to add to the Hip hop culture or music in general?

Me. I’m just another voice in the world trying to be heard. In doing so, I want to inspire people. When you share your experiences, there’s no telling what someone might take away from it. Whatever I add to the culture will be whatever they take with them.

Where did you record you mixtape ‘Proving your wrong since 1988’?

A studio called Young Avenue Sound inMemphis, TN.

Most awkward place you have written a rhyme or thought of producing a beat?

Hmmm… In the shower, on the toilet, at church, and every other place that I’ve been. It’s literally something that im always doing.

When did you start rhyming, and writing lyrics which happen in your day to day?

I’ve been writing rhymes since 3rdgrade man. Ever since I started I put day to day life in my rhymes.

Your from Memphis Tennessee, how does it feel to break the mold of Southern Gangster Rap and being named the ‘New Memphis?

It feels good to be recognized and I really appreciate it. I’m not into the “New Memphis” thing though. I’m just me at the end of the day, no labels necessary. People in Memphis are trying to create a “New Memphis” movement and I really don’t understand what it is. It’s not about what is new or old, it’s about what’s relevant. Yo Gotti has been here for a minute, but I wouldn’t call him old Memphis. He is doing his thing in a major way right now. Besides, why would anybody in New York or Tokyo care if I was “New Memphis”? I just wanna rep for my town.

What kind of music where you brought with?

Everything that was on the radio when I was a kid. Straight up Hip Hop and R&B. Jodeci, MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, Deaht Row, Bad Boy, Arrested Development, I was just listening to everything.

What is your favorite album that is out now?

Probably that new Erykah Badu. That hasn’t came out the deck since I picked it up.

Elvis Presley wrote a song aboutMemphis Tennessee are you going to write any music as a tribute toMemphis Tennessee?

It’s one of those never say never things. Right now I would say no, but who knows.

Where do your next projects lie?

In my hard drive. We’re in the studio working on the next project right now. Ready for yall to hear it.

You are getting a lot of love from people like 9th Wonder, are you going to be working with 9th Wonder?

Definitely, it’s all about timing ya know. When it happens you’ll know, trust me.

Your song Photogenic, are you really photogenic or just describing how fly you are?

Ummm… Hmmm… I guess I’m a photogenic person who is fly. Yeah, I’ll run with that.

Ok whats your favourite sneakers?

The Jordan 12’s forever mane.

Have you had a chance to collaborate with other artists, apart from doing your own projects?

Definitely man, I’ve done a lot of features in the past few months. I don’t when who is dropping what so keep your ears open.

If you was to give me a word that describes your art, what would it be?

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
