Cyantific interview

Dropped in the pan on September 14, 2011 and fried by – it's a sizzler!

Picture 155 460x690 Cyantific interviewDB: Hi, what was your breathrough into this music, the moment it felt it was moving forward? For me was ‘Quiet Star’ (at end)

C: Hello. I think the breakthrough was playing at a night in Vauxhall before High Contrast in 2002. It was total good fortune, as I wasn’t even meant to have that set time. I played a track called ‘Timescape’, and he loved it. I posted him a CD which he passed on to Hospital, and the rest is history.

DB: And was it John B that caught on to you in early days? is it just me or is John B one of the most canny when it comes to A&R? So many forget  the stuff he’s unearthed. Anyway just saying.

C: Yep, it was the aforementioned track ‘Timescape’. I think he does find some gems. I believe Nu:Tone, Logistics and Commix all put out some of their earliest stuff with him.

DB: You are now with RAM? (sc below) Would it be understandably surprising that a ‘Hospital’ artist has made such a transition? tell more.

C: I made a tune with RAM in mind… and that’s where we’re at right now.

DB: Big question: where do you want to take your music… fully-realised as an album? A series of EPs? A live show? I mean I guess I’m asking is AESTHETICALLY what is *you*? I don’t think artists look outside of themselves enough to see what works. Discuss. (hell, for example these days I think some artists should never leave youtube… oddfuture for eg)

C: I’m working on another album at the moment, and have been for a while. It takes time. I have considered a live show in the future, but it would have to be something worth doing and seeing…not just an excuse to write LIVE next to my name and charge more.

DB: OK. Who are your influences and if you had a dream producer (anyone… Freddie Mercury, Courtney Love, Eno) who would you like?

C: There’s so many. Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Timbaland, FSOL, John Barry….

DB: Got any good road stories?

C: I’ve got plenty of road stories, most probably not fit to print! I enjoy a tour with Logistics…it usually ends up in a mess. I’m actually dreading a repeat of our tour to Australasia when I go there with Wilkinson in December.

DB: Thanks
