Little Boots interview and Live at Moda

Posted on | September 22, 2008 by Mark |

Moda in Lincoln are hosting the first installment of the “Annie Mac presents…” Tour this Friday, 26th September. The lineup includes Simian Mobile Disco, Annie Mac and Little Boots.

Thanks to Jay from Moda, we’ve got an interview from Little Boots (questions compiled by Disco Dust, Slutty Fringe, Big Stereo and Get Weird)

Full interview after the jump..

What boots are you wearing?

Afraid I’m currently wearing silver stilettos, sorry!

You grew up in Blackpool and your family still live there. For those who have never been- describe Blackpool in in 3 words.

Tacky, dark and inspiring

Do you go out in Blackpool when you’re back?

Sometimes, only if friends are around I don’t really go buzzing down the Syndicate every spare Saturday but I may be seen at a few of the old haunts occasionally.

You mentioned to Scott Pinglewood in the Fader interview about the Brandy and Monica cover with Anita Thecocknbullkid, Will this ever see the light of day?

I doubt it, I have a lot of musician friends and a lot of daft ideas… some of them happen, most of them don’t. Think this one is in the don’t category, which is a shame coz I think it could’ve been genius!

Who would win in a fight between Joe Goddard & Fake Blood?

Mmmm hard one, as I obviously don’t know who Fake Blood is (honest) its hard to say… but the dying dinosaur noises at the start of ‘Mars’ are pretty scary so would be a tough call.

Not that we would, but do your neighbours ever complain?

Not really, we have this weird old guy who cut our bamboo tree yesterday which we thought was very rude. He actually offered for me to move in there for £90 a week…. I politely declined.

Is gold cat just gold cat or does he/she have a name?

Mmm gold cat is a name.

Have you ever seen a unicorn?

There are apparently only two in existence… Nope everyone keeps telling me its not real but I don’t believe them, I’ve seen some pretty accurate fantasy air brush art so it must be true.
How do you feel about having a huge gay following?

Do I??? I wasn’t really aware I did but if I do that’s great, any kind of following makes me very happy.

Do blondes have more fun?

Its a tough one… for ages I regretted it and wanted to go back to black but now I’ve really got used to it, I’m trying to go more silver blonde so its more spacey. I think blondes definitely get away with more…

Can you get us a cheap tenori-on?

Probably not, they sponsor me so maybe I can have a word but you’d have to prove yourself with some youtube covers to qualify I believe.

When’s the Arecibo EP out?

November I think but its only out in America although will hopefully be in some shops over here on import, its going to be a 12 inch vinyl with amazing artwork and Stuck on Repeat, the Fake Blood remix, Meddle and an exclusive remix by Ebola.

You’ve done lots of DJ gigs and there’s no doubt about your cool credentials- but what can we expect from you new live shows?

Well definitely not cool credentials… I just try to have fun and try and share things that excite me with other people and hopefully get them excited. There’s only a few of us and a Tenori-on but we make quite a racket… strictly no guitars, lots of nice synths new and old and lots of gadgets.

Are you looking forward to being the first ever live band to play at Moda? We are?

Oooh yeah that is exciting. This year has been full of firsts so the more the merrier.

You’ve just worked with Lightspeed Champion on the Basement Jaxx thing. who have you got plans to work with and who would you really like to work with?

That was actually quite a while ago and I only really did backing vocals I don’t even know if the tracks will get used… I’m lucky as I already work with a lot of people I really admire like Joe from Hot Chip and Greg Kurstin. I’d love to work with the Swedish producer Kleerup as I really love how epic and melancholic his tracks are. I think it would be fun to do something with Toddla T as well, so far he’s just done a remix but it was a great one.

Did you intentionally use the every increasing blogosphere to raise your profile or do these things just happen organically these days?

Not at all I’d only just started going on blogs I didn’t really get them for a long time, but I do get labelled as the blog darling a bit… its great that they are all so supportive and get my tracks out to people but I never intentionally do it.

What are your opinions on the blogs?

I heard them described as a virus.

I think they are a great way for music lovers to connect and discover new tracks, but I also think its a very small bubble and just because you’re top of the Hype Machine chart doesn’t really mean anything in the real world, I want to connect further than that.

Have you had much of an industry reaction to your DIY marketing ethos I.e your Myspace and the You-Tube videos?

Yeah I guess so but I tend to just ignore industry stuff none of it really matters as long as you’ve got good songs and you’re genuine… all the youtube covers and blogs and stuff are just me being myself recording a song I like in my bedroom or having a rant when something rattles me… I think it just connects with people and hopefully makes them understand where my music comes from more.

Even though the covers thing started out as a joke it’s obviously been beneficial to you and we love them. what’s the strangest request you’ve had for a cover and have you got a full reportoire. you could do a covers album.

I had one for Rick Astley last week, my friend keeps threatening me to dress up and do it! Maybe I will…. I was quite tempted by Tina Turner’s ‘Private Dancer’ the other week as well.    your current favourites are obviously ever changing. what are your all time favourites? Kate Bush. David Bowie. Carole King. Elton John. Joni Mitchell. Brian Wilson.
