“The Lady with the Blue Fingernails” pointed me in the direction of this, so big up to her…sometimes I can’t rely on my knowledge of music…but a good find, muchos appreciated…
Neon Neon is a new project with Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and hiphop super producer, Boom Bip. The album Stainless Style (featuring Spank Rock, Har Mar Superstar and Yo Majesty) due for release in March 2008, is themed around the life of John Delorean.
“The ballsy businessman dealt in high stakes, borrowing enormous sums of money, including £85 million from the British Government, in order to fulfill his lifelong dream of building an automotive empire. His crowning glory, the iconic DMC-12, better known as simply ‘The DeLorean’, was fittingly immortalized as Marty and Doc’s time machine in legendary 80s movie Back To The Future.
Boom Bip’s euphoric, lush and pin-sharp dancefloor-pop leads us into the heady world of fast cars, fast living, shagpile carpets and the bitter taste of martini as Gruff Rhys’s brilliantly maverick songwriting reimagines - through the eyes of DeLorean himself - the heady romance between the smitten fast-living businessman and silver screen siren. ”
Anyway, on with the tracks. Trick For Treat is a low end hip hop banger featuring Spank Rock, a nice roller for the clubs..heavy on the bass, snares and ace lyrics…

Swear shop is another hip hop banger, crunch bassline, with Yo Majesty on the lyrical tip. Crunch gets more and more as the time flows on - “Management shoes…take a glimpse into the sweatshop…”

Meanwhile, the rest of the album is a mix of lo-fi hiphop and 80s sounding pop ballads, check out “I Told Her On Alderaan” on their myspace for something that sounds like it’s straight out of 1985 - rock on!

Pitchfork had an exclusive mixtape taking in the influences of Neon Neon, and this is what they had to say on the matter:
“The 35-minute set features 1980s and 90s pop, electronic, and disco tracks that served as inspirations for Neon Neon’s revved-up electro-pop, plus Neon Neon rarities and a few words by Har Mar Superstar. From the Italo horror-rock source material for Justice’s “Phantom” to coked-out early-80s electro by Neil Young (from Trans), Paul McCartney (much-blogged McCartney II cut “Temporary Secretary”), and more typical synth wielders like Kraftwerk and Tears for Fears, to giddy dance-pop by Debbie Gibson, Janet Jackson, and Prince, DeLorean might’ve found plenty here to soundtrack his hedonistic exploits. Any thank-you cards should be directed to Boom Bip.”
Tracklist:
Neon Neon: “Theme Song”
Goblin: “Tenebre”
Neil Young: “Sample and Hold”
Paul McCartney: “Temporary Secretary”
Kraftwerk: “Numbers (Wicked Mix)”
Tears for Fears: “Mother’s Talk”
Neon Neon: “Raquel (Extended Mix)”
Debbie Gibson: “Only In My Dreams (Extended Club Mix)”
Janet Jackson: “Pleasure Pricipal (Eli Edit)”
